How to Become a U.S. Citizen
There are many requirements which must be met in order to become a U.S. citizen. The primary qualifications are:
- You must have held a green card for at least five years
- You must prove you are a person of good moral character
- You must prove you have an understanding of U.S. civics
- You must prove your ability to read, speak and write English
The Statutory Period
The five year period prior to applying to become a citizen is a statutory period (When you are in the U.S. with a valid green card). You must prove that during this period of time you have conducted yourself in a moral manner, and have been in the United States for most of the five year period. Common reasons applications are denied relate to “moral character” issues such as being arrested, failing to pay taxes or court ordered payments (i.e., child support, civil judgement, etc.).
The process naturally requires the preparation and filing of legal forms, documentation and information. As your immigration lawyer we will work with you to manage every aspect of your path to becoming a U.S. citizen.
